The Succession of Sovereign Grand Commanders

Between the formation of the order on the 4th August 1846 and the present day, a total of 13 Free and Accepted Masons have led the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in Scotland, these Sovereign Grand Commanders are:-

1846-1849 Dr. Charles Morison of Greenfield, M.D.
Doctor Charles Morison of Greenfield served as a physician with the British Military. He obtained his 33˚ in France along with a Patent from the Supreme Council of France, dated 15th November, 1814 to form A&ASR Chapters & Councils in Scotland. In 1846 he along with the other founder members formed the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Scotland and became the new orders first Sovereign Grand Commander. He passed to the Grand Lodge above in 1849.

1850-1864 George Augustus, 6th Duke of Atholl
George Augustus, 6th Duke of Atholl served as Grand Master of the Order of the Temple from 1845 until 1863 and was serving in the position when he became a Founder Member of the A&ASR. After the death of Dr. Charles Morison he became the second Sovereign Grand Commander from 1850 until he passed to the Grand Lodge above in 1864.

1865-1884 John Whyte-Melville of Bennochy & Strathkinness
John Whyte-Melville of Bennochy & Strathkinness was a founder member of the Supreme Council for Scotland of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, he was also prolific in his Freemasonry, serving the Craft in Scotland by being the head of three Masonic Orders at the same time.

He was Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1864 to 1867, Grand Master of the Order of the Temple from 1865 to 1883.

He became the third Sovereign Grand Commander in 1865 and served until his death in 1884.


1884-1890 Francis, 4th Earl of Rosslyn
Francis, 4th Earl of Rosslyn served as the fourth Sovereign Grand Commander from 1884 to 1890, he was also the Grand Master of the Order of the Temple for the same period. He passed to the Grand Lodge above in 1890.

1891-1893 Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart of Ardgowan, 7th Bt.
Colonel Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart of Ardgowan was elected the Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1873 and 1882. In 1891 he became the fifth Sovereign Grand Commander and served the Council for two years.

Outside of Freemasonry he was a Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire from 1855 to 1865, the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire from 1869 to 1903. He also served as the Provincial Grand Master of Renfrewshire West.

He passed to the Grand Lodge above on the 10th December 1903.


1893-1929 Algernon Hawkins Thogond Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore
Algernon Hawkins Thogond Keith-Falconer served as Sovereign Grand Commander from 1893 until 1929 and was also Grand Master of the Order of the Temple from 1906 until 1928. He also served as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of South Australia.

Outside of Freemasonry he was the Governor of South Australia from the 11 April 1889 until the 10 April 1895.

He resigned from the position of Sovereign Grand Commander in 1929 and passed the following year.

1930-1933 Alexander, 19th Lord Saltoun
Alexander,19th Lord Saltoun served as Grand Master of the Order of the Temple from 1906 until 1928, he was appointed Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1930 and 1933, serving as the 7th Sovereign Grand Commander during the same period.

1933-1940 Christopher Charles Nisbet of Stobshiel
Christopher Charles Nisbet succeded to the Soverign Council on the 1st October 1902 and became the Eighth Sovereign Grand Commander in 1933. He passed to the Grand Lodge above in 1940.

1941-1961 John James Hamilton Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair, KT, DSO, DL
John James Hamilton Dalrymple served as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1924 and 1926. He became the ninth Sovereign Grand Commander in 1941 until his passing in 1961.
Outside of Freemasonry he served as a Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire betwen 1906-1914, and was appointed as Lord Lieutenant of Wigtown from 1935 untill his passing.


1962-1970 Alexander Godfrey, 7th Lord Macdonald of Sleat
Alexander Godfrey Macdonald, 7th Lord Macdonald of Sleat succeeded to the Sovereign Council on the 4 Nov 1947, served as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1953 and 1957 and became the tenth Sovereign Grand Commander in 1962 until his passing in 1970. Lord Macdonald also served as Lord-Lieutenant of Inverness-shire from 1952.

1970-1978 Randolph Algernon Ronald Stewart, 12th Earl of Galloway
Randolph Algernon Ronald Stewart, 12th Earl of Galloway served as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1945 and 1959 and became the eleventh Sovereign Grand Commander in 1970 until his passing in 1978.

1978-1995 Captain Robert Wolrige Gordon of Esslemont
Captain Robert Wolrige Gordon of Esslemont succeeded to the Sovereign Council on the 4 Nov 1974, served as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1974 and 1979 and became the twelfth Sovereign Grand Commander in 1978 until his passing in 1995
 

1995-???? J. M. Marcus Humphrey of Dinnet
The current M∴P∴ Sovereign Grand Commander J.M. Marcus Humphrey of Dinnet 33˚ succeeded to the Supreme Council on the 28th March 1984.

After serving the council for 11 years he became the Sovereign Grand Commander in 1995.

In addition he served as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland between 1983 and 1988.
